By 2011 people needing care and support will have the freedom to choose from a wider range of services. That is the clear ambition of the Department of Health's Putting People programme launched in December 2007.
Individuals will perform self assessments to help define the outcomes they wish to achieve and the services they require. Personal budgets will be allocated to individuals. Self-directed support will enable individuals to plan and manage their own priorities and care needs. This freedom and choice will stimulate a new marketplace for the supply of a diverse range of quality services.
More recently the Government has announced that it is extending the initiative to cover long-term, chronic health conditions.
